Label narration as first or third person
When to use this goal
For students who cannot tell whether a narrator is a character in the story or someone outside it. Present levels in comprehension and pronoun knowledge, not grade, decide fit. Students still learning pronouns may need a language goal first.
- Baseline
- Chance on a two-way label is half, so require the circled pronoun for the annual behavior and read the baseline with that in mind. Include passages where a first-person narrator talks about other people, which trips many students up.
- Tips
- Dialogue in third-person stories contains I and me, so teach the student to look outside the quotation marks. Extend to telling what the narrator can and cannot know once labeling is reliable (rd-lit-007).
- Limits
- Labels alone do not show how point of view shapes a story. Second-person texts are rare in fiction and are left out of this probe.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given 10 short instructional-level passages, some told in first person and some in third person, the student will label each passage first person or third person and circle the pronoun that shows it independently with at least 90% accuracy on point-of-view passages, on 3 of 4 consecutive biweekly probes, as measured by work-sample analysis collected every two weeks.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Work-sample analysis gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Literary Analysis & Author's Craft.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
