Name what the author and illustrator do

K-2, PKPercent accuracyTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For kindergarten and first grade students who can point to the title but mix up the author and illustrator or say the author drew the book. Present levels in finding the title (rd-pc-011) show readiness.

Baseline
Use books whose covers show both names clearly and use the words by and illustrated by. Score each of the 4 questions per book. Books with one person as author and illustrator are a good later check.
Tips
Make cover talk part of every read-aloud. Students who use AAC can answer with wrote and drew buttons. Writing their own books, with the student as author and illustrator, makes the roles stick.
Limits
Covers vary; some list only one name or none. Measures cover knowledge, not comprehension.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, before shared reading of a new book, when the adult asks 4 cover questions (title, author, illustrator, what each one did), the student will point to the title, author and illustrator names on the cover and tell that the author wrote the words and the illustrator made the pictures independently with at least 83% accuracy on book cover questions, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.

Baseline: 33% accuracy.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Print Concepts & Early Literacy.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
