Irregular words on a timed list

3-5, 6-8Rate (per minute)TemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For upper-elementary students who read irregular words correctly but slowly (though, through, enough, island, answer), which slows passage reading. Fit depends on present levels showing high accuracy on these words untimed.

Baseline
Use three versions of the list in different orders and take the median. Note words that slow the student most; they become the focus of extra practice.
Tips
Short daily timings with a graph keep practice quick. This goal fits after accuracy is in place; for accuracy, use the heart-word templates.
Limits
List speed does not always transfer to passages. Lists can be memorized in order; reshuffle each time.

Something an adult can see, count or time.

Criterion

Count of correct responses per minute on a timed task.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Criterion wording

Data collection

A fixed-length timing (for example, 1 or 2 minutes) used to calculate a per-minute rate.

How often data are collected
Mastery rule

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given a 1-minute probe of 40 previously taught irregular words in random order, the student will read the words aloud in order across the rows independently at a rate of at least 50 correct words per minute, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by timed probes collected weekly.

Baseline: 28 correct words per minute.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Rate (per minute) fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Timed probes gives rate (per minute) data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Sight Word Recognition.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
