Answer word-meaning test items using the passage

9-12Percent accuracyTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For high school students preparing for state and college-entry tests, where word-meaning items ask what a familiar word means in a specific sentence. Students often pick the most common meaning instead of the one that fits. Present levels decide the passage level.

Baseline
Use released practice items. Count an item correct only with a reasonable clue underlined, to limit guessing. Note how often the student chose the most common meaning of the word.
Tips
The cover-the-choices step is the core of the strategy. Use the same item type all year so data compares.
Limits
Test items are a narrow format and do not show broad vocabulary. Practice sets differ in difficulty.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given 8 practice vocabulary-in-context items, each with a short passage and 4 answer choices, the student will choose the answer that fits the sentence and underline the clue in the passage that supports it independently with at least 80% accuracy on vocabulary-in-context items answered with a supporting clue, on 3 of 4 consecutive biweekly probes, as measured by work-sample analysis collected every two weeks.

Baseline: 45% accuracy.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Work-sample analysis gives percent accuracy data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Vocabulary.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
