Produce the target sound during a prepared oral presentation
When to use this goal
For older students accurate in structured tasks who want their target sound to hold up during presentations, which are planned but delivered under pressure. Base the choice on reading and retell data and the student's own priorities.
- Baseline
- Record a short rehearsed talk and score every occurrence of the target sound. Compare with reading-aloud accuracy; the difference shows the effect of speaking from notes under pressure. Ask the student how aware they were of the sound while speaking.
- Tips
- Score every occurrence of the target sound from a recording. Rehearsals provide most data points because real presentations are rare; the mastery rule allows either. Agree with the student on whether the SLP will attend or the teacher will record. Marking notes is a strategy the student can keep using after services end.
- Limits
- Presentations are planned speech and do not show conversational carryover (sl-art-004). Nerves affect speech, so one low score is not a trend. Recording in class requires the student's agreement and attention to privacy.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, during a 2- to 3-minute prepared presentation rehearsed with the SLP, the student will produce Blank to fill in: [target sound, e.g. /r/] correctly throughout the presentation independently with at least 90% accuracy on target-sound occurrences, across 3 consecutive presentations or rehearsals, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected at each rehearsal and presentation, at least monthly.
Baseline: 60% accuracy.

Issue: Blanks filled in. 1 blank is still empty: [target sound]. Write in what this student will work on, such as the target sound or the strategy the team chose.
Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Articulation.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
