Say three-consonant clusters like str and spl
When to use this goal
For students who have two-consonant blends but reduce three-consonant clusters (str, spr, scr, spl, squ) in words such as street, spring, scratch, splash, and square. Base the choice on a cluster probe. Present levels, not grade, decide fit.
- Baseline
- Probe each cluster type with 4 words and note which consonant is lost. Check whether the two-consonant blends inside the cluster (st, tr) are correct on their own; if not, start there.
- Tips
- Score correct when all three consonants are present and the /s/ and /r/ or /l/ are correct. Teaching three-element clusters can spread to simpler clusters in some students, which is why some SLPs choose them as early targets. Multisyllabic academic words make the reading condition relevant for older students.
- Limits
- Fast casual speech reduces some clusters naturally, so do not hold conversation to this standard. In dialects that reduce clusters by rule, those patterns are not errors.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given 20 word cards starting with str, spr, scr, spl, or squ, the student will produce all three consonants of the cluster at the start of each word independently with at least 85% accuracy on three-consonant cluster productions, across 3 consecutive therapy sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected during each therapy session.
Baseline: 40% accuracy.

Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Articulation.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
