Keep the target sound accurate in monthly checks
When to use this goal
For students who have met their carryover goal and are moving to a monitoring or consult schedule before dismissal. The goal checks that accuracy holds without regular therapy. Base the choice on carryover data and a team decision to reduce direct services.
- Baseline
- Use the last carryover probe as the baseline. Score the first 20 to 30 target-sound occurrences in each probe so months are comparable. Ask the student how often they still think about the sound.
- Tips
- This is a maintenance goal: the baseline is already high, and the aim is that it stays there. If accuracy drops below the agreed level in two probes, the team returns to more frequent sessions. Students can take part in deciding when they are done.
- Limits
- Monthly probes are brief and may miss slips in stressful situations. The baseline and target are close by design, which can look like little change on a progress report; explain that maintenance is the goal.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, during a monthly 3-minute conversation probe with the SLP on a topic the student picks, the student will independently produce the target sound correctly in conversation without practice beforehand with at least 90% accuracy on target-sound occurrences in a monthly probe, on 3 consecutive monthly probes, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected monthly.
Baseline: 85% accuracy.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Articulation.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
