Keep "th" clear in a short conversation

When to use this goal

For students who use voiced and voiceless "th" correctly in structured sentences but not yet in relaxed talk. Present levels and a recorded conversational sample, not grade, decide fit. Check the dialect question before writing the goal.

Baseline
Record two 5-minute samples and score every voiced and voiceless "th" the student says. Note how many "th" words come up, since a sample with very few gives an unstable percentage; aim for at least 15 per sample.
Tips
Score from the recording, not live, so the conversation stays natural. Function words such as the and with are reduced in fast speech; a light tongue touch counts as correct.
Limits
The student chooses the words, so the number of "th" words varies between samples. A therapy-room conversation is still a familiar setting; check class talk separately before dismissal.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during a 5-minute recorded conversation with the SLP about a topic the student chooses, the student will produce voiced and voiceless "th" with the tongue forward in the words they use independently with at least 80% accuracy on "th" productions in a conversational sample, in 3 of 4 consecutive biweekly samples, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected every two weeks, from a recorded sample.

Baseline: 40% accuracy.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Articulation.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
