Recall the key ideas of a textbook section
When to use this goal
For secondary students who read or listen to textbook sections but recall only a few scattered ideas. The SLP and teacher list the key idea units in the section ahead of time, and the retell is scored against that list. Base the choice on retell probes and class performance.
- Baseline
- List 10 key idea units for two or three sections of similar length. Record the retell and check off ideas recalled in any wording. Compare listening and reading conditions to see whether decoding is part of the gap.
- Tips
- Score an idea unit as recalled when the meaning is present in any words, language, or mode. Agree on idea units with the content teacher so the list reflects what matters for the class. Share the retell results with the teacher as a study-skill check.
- Limits
- Idea-unit lists take time to prepare; reuse them across students. Recall depends on memory and attention as well as language. The score does not show organization (see sl-nar-026).

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, after reading or listening to a 1- to 2-page textbook section from a current unit, with 10 key ideas listed in advance by the SLP and teacher, the student will retell the key ideas of the section aloud in their own words independently with at least 70% accuracy on key idea units recalled, in 3 of 4 consecutive biweekly probes, as measured by work-sample analysis collected every two weeks.
Baseline: 30% accuracy.

Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
