Use the target sound pattern in carrier phrases and short sentences
When to use this goal
For students accurate with the target pattern in single words (sl-phon-001 to sl-phon-005) who are not yet accurate in connected speech (sl-phon-006). Carrier phrases bridge the two. Base the choice on single-word probe data.
- Baseline
- Elicit 20 target words in carrier phrases and 10 in student-made sentences and score the pattern in each. Compare with single-word accuracy to confirm the drop happens when words are combined.
- Tips
- Score the target word in each phrase; other words are not scored unless the pattern applies to them too, in which case decide in advance. Carrier phrases keep the demand low so the student can attend to the pattern. Move to sl-phon-006 once phrase accuracy is stable.
- Limits
- Carrier phrases are rehearsed and predictable; accuracy here overestimates spontaneous speech. The goal tracks one pattern.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given 20 Blank to fill in: [target words, e.g. words with final consonants], each said in a carrier phrase such as "I see a ___" or "I want the ___", the student will produce the target sound pattern correctly in each phrase independently with at least 80% accuracy on target-pattern productions in phrases, across 3 consecutive therapy sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected during each therapy session.

Issue: Blanks filled in. 1 blank is still empty: [target words]. Write in what this student will work on, such as the target sound or the strategy the team chose.
Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Phonological Processes.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
