Catch the puppet's missing final sound

PK, K-2Percent accuracyTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For children who leave final consonants off (or use another pattern) and who are ready to judge whether a word is said right. A puppet who sometimes leaves off the last sound gives the child a playful way to notice the pattern in someone else's speech first. Base the choice on the SLP's analysis.

Baseline
Present 10 words, about half incorrect, and score each judgment. If the child says everything is right, try with fewer items and more obvious errors. Use words the child knows well.
Tips
Score each judgment, not the child's own production. The second behavior adds a production step that can be scored separately. Change the target pattern in the puppet's errors to match the child's own pattern (for example, fronting /k/ instead of dropping final sounds).
Limits
Judging others' speech is easier than judging one's own. This is a support skill and needs a production goal alongside it.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, when a puppet names 10 pictures, saying about half of them without the final sound, the student will tell whether the puppet said each word right or wrong by pointing to a thumbs-up or thumbs-down card independently with at least 90% accuracy on right-or-wrong judgments of spoken words, across 3 consecutive therapy sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected during each therapy session.

Baseline: 50% accuracy.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Phonological Processes.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
