Keep the target pattern while reading aloud
When to use this goal
For students with a remaining phonological pattern (often cluster reduction or a residual final consonant pattern) who use the pattern correctly in therapy sentences but not while reading. Reading aloud is a regular task in early grades and gives a controlled sample. Base the choice on sentence-level data and the student's independent reading level.
- Baseline
- Score the first 20 target-pattern words in a passage at the student's independent level. Separate decoding errors from speech errors: a misread word is not scored for the pattern.
- Tips
- Score only words read correctly as words; mark decoding errors separately. Coordinate with the reading teacher so passages fit the student's reading level. Reading aloud supports the link between speech and print.
- Limits
- Reading is not spontaneous speech. If decoding is still hard, accuracy will reflect reading more than speech; use spoken tasks instead.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, while reading aloud a passage at their independent reading level that contains at least 20 words with Blank to fill in: [target pattern, e.g. consonant clusters], the student will read each target-pattern word aloud with the pattern produced correctly independently with at least 90% accuracy on target-pattern words read aloud correctly, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.
Baseline: 55% accuracy.

Issue: Blanks filled in. 1 blank is still empty: [target pattern]. Write in what this student will work on, such as the target sound or the strategy the team chose.
Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Phonological Processes.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
