Imitate the target pattern with a hand cue
When to use this goal
For preschool children who cannot yet produce the target pattern even with a spoken model, and who need a visual or touch cue to show what changes (a hand that pops open for a final sound, two fingers for a cluster). This is the stimulability step before word practice. Base the choice on the SLP's stimulability testing.
- Baseline
- Model 10 words with a spoken model only, then 10 with the hand cue, and compare. Try a few cue types (hand, picture, touch on the cheek) to find the one that works for this child.
- Tips
- Score correct when the imitation includes the pattern. Supports are listed from most to least cueing because the goal is to fade the cue: the annual target is imitation after a spoken model alone. Teach families the same cue so it means the same thing at home.
- Limits
- Imitation with cues is the most supported level. If the child cannot imitate the pattern after many sessions, the SLP should consider a motor speech evaluation or a different approach.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given 20 words with Blank to fill in: [target pattern, e.g. final consonants], each modeled by the SLP with a matching hand cue, the student will imitate each word with the target pattern produced after a model with the hand cue with at least 70% accuracy on imitated words with the target pattern, across 3 consecutive therapy sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected during each therapy session.
Baseline: 15% accuracy.

Issue: Blanks filled in. 1 blank is still empty: [target pattern]. Write in what this student will work on, such as the target sound or the strategy the team chose.
Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Phonological Processes.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
