Use easy onset on vowel-initial words, sentences, and reading

When to use this goal

For students whose voice plan targets hard glottal attacks (a sharp, pressed start on words that begin with a vowel, such as "apple" or "I"). Easy onset is a gentle, breath-first start. Base the choice on the medical evaluation and the SLP's voice evaluation.

Baseline
Record 20 vowel-initial words and a paragraph and mark each vowel-initial word as easy or hard onset. Note whether hard attacks increase with loudness or excitement. Confirm the medical evaluation and voice plan are in place before setting the goal.
Tips
Score each vowel-initial word correct when the SLP hears a gentle start without a hard attack, using the voice plan's definition. Starting with an /h/ and fading it is a common teaching route; score the faded version as the target. Recording lets the student compare. Move to conversation and class with sl-voi-001 and sl-voi-002.
Limits
Easy onset judgments are perceptual; the same listener should score. Structured lists do not show carryover. Voice therapy goals follow a medical (ENT or laryngology) evaluation.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given 20 words beginning with a vowel, read or repeated, the student will independently start each vowel-initial word with an easy onset (a gentle, breathy start without a hard attack) with at least 85% accuracy on vowel-initial words produced with easy onset, across 3 consecutive therapy sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected during each therapy session.

Baseline: 35% accuracy.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Voice.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
