Write a caption that explains a diagram, chart, or image
When to use this goal
For students who can read a graph or diagram and talk about it but write a label instead of an explanation when asked to caption it in science, social studies, or math. Present levels should show sentence-level writing; the goal applies it to a short, frequent content-area format.
- Baseline
- Give two probes of five visuals. A caption is correct when it is in complete sentences, accurately names what the visual shows, and states one observation beyond a label. Record whether errors are inaccuracies (a reading-the-visual problem) or labels only (a writing problem).
- Tips
- Pull visuals from the student's actual texts and assignments so the captions are useful notes. Captions are short, so this probe takes minutes and fits a weekly schedule. The frame is a strong support; fade it if the goal is written as independent.
- Limits
- Reading a graph is a separate skill; inaccurate captions may reflect that rather than writing. Visuals vary in complexity. Five items per probe give coarse percentages.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given five diagrams, charts, or images from a current content-area unit, the student will write a caption of one to three sentences for each visual that names what it shows and states one thing a reader should notice independently with at least 80% accuracy on visuals, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by work-sample analysis collected weekly.
Baseline: 20% accuracy.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Work-sample analysis gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Written Expression.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
