Complete reading response journal entries

When to use this goal

For upper elementary students who can answer reading response prompts when an adult sits with them but leave most journal entries unfinished during independent reading time. Present levels should show the student can write a few sentences; the goal is finishing assigned entries.

Baseline
Review two to three weeks of journals and count entries with at least three sentences that respond to the prompt, out of entries assigned. Note whether unfinished entries are blank, one line, or off-prompt; each points to a different support.
Tips
Letting the student choose from a menu of prompts often raises completion more than any other support. Check that the book is one the student can read or listen to. Pair with a rubric goal later if response quality becomes the focus.
Limits
Completion counts length and relevance, not depth of response. Missed reading days lower the count for reasons outside the skill; record absences. Journals can go home and get lost, so keep them in class on data weeks.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during independent reading time, given a reading response journal with one prompt per day, the student will complete each assigned journal entry with at least three sentences that respond to the prompt and name the book independently, completing at least 85% of assigned reading response entries, across 4 consecutive weeks, as measured by work-sample analysis collected weekly.

Baseline: 40% of assigned work.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Work completion fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Work-sample analysis gives work completion data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Written Expression.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
