Complete the written-response items on classwork
When to use this goal
For middle and high school students who finish multiple-choice and fill-in parts of assignments but leave short-answer and written-response items blank. Present levels should show the student can write a sentence-level answer when started; the target is completing those items during class or homework.
- Baseline
- For two weeks, collect assignments from two or three classes and count written-response items attempted with at least one sentence, out of those assigned. Compare with completion on other item types; a big gap points to writing, not general work completion.
- Tips
- Agree with teachers on a quick way to send assignments to the case manager (a folder or a photo). Speech-to-text often closes much of the gap; if it does, the goal can move to quality. Ask the student which items are hardest; their answer guides the support.
- Limits
- Completion does not judge accuracy or quality. Assignments vary in how many written items they include. Collecting work from several teachers takes coordination.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, across content-area classwork and homework that include short-answer or written-response items, the student will write an answer in at least one complete sentence to each short-answer and written-response item on the assignment independently, completing at least 85% of assigned written-response items, across 4 consecutive weeks, as measured by work-sample analysis collected weekly.
Baseline: 35% of assigned work.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Work completion fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Work-sample analysis gives work completion data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Written Expression.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Record how many assigned items were completed and how many were assigned for the defined work period.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
