Turn speech bubbles into quoted sentences

K-2, 3-5Percent accuracyTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For second and third graders who are starting to write what characters say but leave out quotation marks or put them around the whole sentence. Present levels should show reliable end punctuation; speech bubbles make the spoken words easy to see.

Baseline
Give two probes of 8 panels. Score correct when quotation marks open and close around the spoken words only. Comma placement is noted but not scored at this level.
Tips
Speech bubbles are a familiar way into quotation marks. Move to dialogue in the student's own stories once the probe is easy. Full dialogue punctuation with commas comes later.
Limits
Panel tasks are much easier than punctuating dialogue while writing a story. Commas are not scored here. Reading the bubbles requires some decoding; read them aloud if needed.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given 8 comic panels with a speech bubble and a named speaker in each, the student will write a sentence for each panel that names the speaker and puts quotation marks around only the words in the speech bubble independently with at least 80% accuracy on comic panels, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by work-sample analysis collected weekly.

Baseline: 20% accuracy.
