Capitalize book and movie titles in sentences
When to use this goal
For students who write titles in all lowercase or capitalize every word including small words (the lost puppy or The Lost Puppy In The Snow). Present levels should show reliable capitals at sentence starts and for names.
- Baseline
- Give two probes of 10 titles. Score a title correct only when every word is right. Note whether the student capitalizes too few words or too many.
- Tips
- Use titles the student knows and cares about. The small-words card can stay on the desk for reading responses. Underlining or italics for titles can be taught later.
- Limits
- Style guides differ on some small words (with, from); pick one rule for the class. The probe isolates titles; check reading responses for transfer.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given 10 sentences that include a book, movie, song, or game title written in lowercase, the student will capitalize the first word and every important word of each title and keep short words such as a, the, of, and in lowercase independently with at least 85% accuracy on titles, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by work-sample analysis collected weekly.
Baseline: 30% accuracy.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
