Punctuate quoted text evidence correctly
When to use this goal
For students who use text evidence but forget the closing quotation mark, place periods and commas outside it, or leave out the page or paragraph citation. Present levels should show the student chooses relevant quotes; the target is punctuating them.
- Baseline
- Score every quotation in two or three recent assignments. Correct means both quotation marks, end punctuation placed by the class style, and a citation. Track which part is missed most.
- Tips
- In most school styles, the period goes after the parenthetical citation ("quote" (12).); show models. Use the student's own essays for data. Pair with the embedded quotation paragraph goal.
- Limits
- Citation formats vary across teachers; agree on one. Assignments vary in how many quotations they include. The goal does not judge quote choice.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
