Punctuate in-text citations in research writing
When to use this goal
For high school students whose research writing includes sources but whose in-text citations are missing parts or punctuated inconsistently. Present levels should show the student uses sources in writing; the goal targets the mechanics of the citation itself in the class style.
- Baseline
- Score all in-text citations in two research assignments. Correct means the right parts in the right order with correct punctuation. Note missing citations separately; that is a documentation issue more than a mechanics one.
- Tips
- Agree with teachers on one style per course. The model card should show the three or four patterns the student uses most. Pair with the signal phrase goal in written expression.
- Limits
- Citation styles differ by course. Sources without authors or pages need special rules; teach them later. The goal does not judge whether sources are used well.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, when writing a research paper or source-based essay in the class citation style, the student will add an in-text citation after each source-based sentence with the author or title and page in the class style, placing the period after the closing parenthesis independently with at least 85% accuracy on in-text citations, on 3 of 4 consecutive scored assignments, as measured by work-sample analysis collected every two weeks.
Baseline: 25% accuracy.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
