Has, have, does, and do in sentences
When to use this goal
For students who use is and are correctly but mix up present-tense verbs that change for one or more (she have, they goes, he do). Writing samples and present levels, not grade, decide fit, and the goal concerns formal written English, not a judgment of home language.
- Baseline
- Use one probe and one writing sample. Note whether errors happen with pronoun subjects (he, they) or with noun subjects (the dogs), which are often harder.
- Tips
- Pairs with an is and are goal. Teach the rule as one or more: one person or thing takes the -s form. Move to the picture-writing condition once frames are steady.
- Limits
- Frames are easier than open writing. Students learning English may need oral practice with the forms before the written goal.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given 20 sentence frames with a singular or plural subject and a missing present-tense verb (has or have, does or do, goes or go, or a verb with -s), the student will write the present-tense verb form that agrees with the subject independently with at least 85% accuracy on present-tense verbs, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by work-sample analysis collected weekly.
Baseline: 45% accuracy.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
