Combine ideas from two sources in one paragraph

When to use this goal

For high school students who write source-based paragraphs as one summary after another (Source A says... Source B says...) without connecting them. Present levels should show paragraphs with cited evidence; the target is organizing a paragraph around the student's point with both sources in support.

Baseline
Score two source-based paragraphs, each row 0 to 3. Note whether the paragraph is organized around the sources (one then the other) or around a point.
Tips
Choose sources that clearly agree or disagree at first. Synthesis paragraphs prepare students for research papers and college writing. The chart helps students see the relationship before writing.
Limits
Reading two sources is demanding; text-to-speech helps when reading is not the target. Scores depend on the sources chosen. Conventions are not scored.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given two short sources on the same issue and a synthesis prompt, the student will write a paragraph that opens with the student's own point, uses evidence from both sources, and states how the sources agree, differ, or build on each other independently, earning a score of at least 9 out of 12 on a 12-point synthesis paragraph rubric, on 3 of 4 consecutive scored paragraphs, as measured by a defined scoring rubric collected every two weeks.

Baseline: 3 out of 12 rubric points.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Paragraph Organization.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
