Spell two-syllable and compound words by syllable

When to use this goal

For students who spell one-syllable pattern words but collapse longer words (writing basket as bakt). Present levels should show reliable short- and long-vowel patterns in single syllables; this goal applies them across syllables.

Baseline
Give two or three probes of 15 unpracticed words sampling each syllable type in the goal. Score whole words, and mark on the data sheet whether each error was a missing syllable, a wrong vowel in one syllable, or a doubled consonant issue; the pattern guides instruction.
Tips
Teach syllable division as a spelling strategy (say it, count it, spell each part). Compound words are a confidence-building first step. Draw from a pattern bank so no probe word has been practiced that week.
Limits
Schwa vowels in unstressed syllables are hard to spell by sound and may need word-specific memory. Whole-word scoring hides partial gains; a syllable-level tally helps. Dictation does not show transfer to the student's writing.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given 15 dictated unpracticed two-syllable words with closed syllables and compound words, the student will spell each word by writing one syllable at a time independently with at least 80% accuracy on target words, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by curriculum-based measurement probes collected weekly.

Baseline: 30% accuracy.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Curriculum-based measurement gives percent accuracy data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Spelling.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
