Spell content-area vocabulary words
When to use this goal
For students who avoid key terms in science, social studies, or math writing because they cannot spell them, which hides what they know. Present levels should show that the words are understood; the goal targets spelling the current unit's terms.
- Baseline
- Pull 10 words from the current unit's word wall and test them before they are taught for spelling. Record whether misspellings are readable (phototsynthesis) or not; readable attempts show the student is close and may need only syllable work. Note which words the student avoids in writing.
- Tips
- Choose words the student will need to write in that unit's assignments; a word list of 10 per unit is enough. Teach the words by syllables and meaningful parts (photo-synthesis). Allow the personal word list during class writing if the goal names it as a support.
- Limits
- The word set changes each unit, so percentages across units are not comparable; the goal shows whether the student can learn each set. Long technical words may be beyond the student's decoding level, which should be addressed first. Dictated accuracy does not show use in writing.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given 10 vocabulary words from the current content-area unit, dictated with a definition cue, the student will spell each content-area word in writing independently with at least 80% accuracy on content-area words, across 3 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by work-sample analysis collected weekly.
Baseline: 30% accuracy.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Work-sample analysis gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Spelling.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
