Spell taught-pattern words on a timed dictation
When to use this goal
For students in a structured phonics sequence whose untimed spelling is accurate but slow and effortful, so it breaks down in writing. Present levels should show at least 70% accuracy on untimed lists of the taught patterns; this goal adds automaticity on those patterns.
- Baseline
- Give three timed dictations from a pool of taught-pattern words. Score correct letter sequences (each pair of adjacent letters in the right order, plus the first and last letter boundaries) and divide by 2. Use the median. Keep the pool fixed for a unit so scores compare.
- Tips
- Unlike a general spelling probe, this one tracks only patterns the student has been taught, so it shows mastery of the current scope. Refresh the pool when a new unit starts and note the change on the graph. Correct letter sequences give credit for partly correct words.
- Limits
- Pool changes make long-term comparisons hard; run a general outcome probe each quarter as well. Pace affects scores for students with slow handwriting; consider typing. The probe does not show spelling in sentences.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given a 2-minute dictation of words from phonics patterns taught so far, one word every 7 seconds (total divided by 2 for the per-minute rate), the student will write each dictated word before the next one is given independently at a rate of at least 24 correct letter sequences per minute, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by timed probes collected weekly.
Baseline: 14 correct letter sequences per minute.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Rate (per minute) fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Timed probes gives rate (per minute) data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Spelling.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
