Write words that end in -ng or -nk

K-2Percent accuracyTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who spell short-vowel words but drop or swap letters in words ending in -ang, -ing, -ong, -ung, -ank, -ink, -onk, -unk (sing as sig, bank as bak). Present levels should show reliable CVC and digraph spelling.

Baseline
Give two lists of 12 words. Score each word correct when fully spelled. Record whether errors are in the vowel, the n, or the g or k; dropping the n is the most common.
Tips
Teach the endings as units because the vowel sound changes slightly before ng and nk. Mix in a few CVC words so the student does not add ng to everything. Check journals for transfer.
Limits
Regional accents affect how the vowel sounds; accept the standard spelling and note the issue. The probe is pattern-specific. Spelling in sentences may lag.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given 12 dictated words ending in -ng or -nk, the student will write each word with the correct vowel and -ng or -nk ending independently with at least 85% accuracy on dictated words, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by curriculum-based measurement probes collected weekly.

Baseline: 35% accuracy.
