Choose soft or hard c and g
When to use this goal
For students who spell soft c and soft g words with s and j (sity, jem) or misspell hard c and g before e, i, and y. Present levels should show reliable short and long vowel spelling; this rule depends on the letter that follows.
- Baseline
- Give two lists of 15 mixed words and score each word. Track errors on the c or g separately from other errors in the word, so the rule's effect is visible even when other parts are wrong.
- Tips
- Pair spelling with reading the same words so the rule works both ways. Include -ge and -dge words once the student is ready to connect this rule to position rules. Some words break the rule (get, girl); teach those as exceptions.
- Limits
- Choosing between s and c for /s/ is not fully predictable from the rule; accept that some words need memory. Lists isolate the rule; transfer to writing must be checked. Ten to fifteen words give rough data.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given 15 dictated words with soft or hard c and g (such as city, cent, cage, giant, cot, gum), the student will spell each word using c or g where the rule calls for it, with the rest of the word correct independently with at least 85% accuracy on dictated words, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by curriculum-based measurement probes collected weekly.
Baseline: 35% accuracy.

Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
