Divide and spell consonant-le words
When to use this goal
For students who spell two-syllable words ending in -le as -el or -ul (tabul, littel) or forget to double the consonant (litle). Present levels should show reliable closed and open syllable spelling.
- Baseline
- Give two lists of 15 words. Score each word and note whether errors are in the -le ending, the doubling, or the first syllable vowel. Doubling errors usually mean the first syllable type needs reteaching.
- Tips
- Teach that a closed first syllable needs two consonants before -le (lit-tle) and an open one needs one (ta-ble). Pair with reading the same words. Include a few -el words (camel, travel) once the rule is solid.
- Limits
- Exceptions exist; teach them as a small list. The probe isolates one syllable type. Transfer to writing needs checking.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given 15 dictated words with a final consonant-le syllable (such as table, little, puzzle, candle), the student will spell each word by syllable, writing the first syllable correctly and ending with the consonant-le syllable independently with at least 85% accuracy on dictated words, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by curriculum-based measurement probes collected weekly.
Baseline: 35% accuracy.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
