Recover unclear vowels from a related word
When to use this goal
For middle school students who misspell the unstressed (schwa) vowel in longer words (compitition, definate, grammer) because it sounds like uh. Present levels should show reliable base-word and suffix spelling; the goal teaches thinking of a related word where the vowel is clear (compete, finite, grammatical).
- Baseline
- Give two lists of 15 words and score each word. Track the schwa vowel separately. Ask the student to name a related word for missed items; whether they can find one tells you if the need is vocabulary or strategy.
- Tips
- This strategy rewards vocabulary knowledge; build word families in content classes. Keep a running list of schwa words from the student's own writing. Students like seeing that English spelling has reasons.
- Limits
- Not every schwa word has a helpful relative. Students with limited vocabulary will find this hard at first. Lists do not show transfer to writing.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given 15 dictated words with a schwa vowel that a related word makes clear, the student will spell each word with the correct vowel in the unstressed syllable and name the related word that shows it independently with at least 80% accuracy on dictated words, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by curriculum-based measurement probes collected weekly.
Baseline: 30% accuracy.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Curriculum-based measurement gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Spelling.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
