Write content vocabulary on a timed dictation

When to use this goal

For middle and high school students who can spell content terms slowly but cannot keep up when taking notes or answering in class. Present levels should show untimed accuracy on unit vocabulary; this goal adds speed so spelling does not slow content work.

Baseline
Give three timed probes from the current unit's word list. Score correct letter sequences and divide by 2. Long content words give partial credit through letter sequences, which shows growth before whole words are correct.
Tips
Pull words from upcoming units so practice pre-teaches vocabulary. Unit changes shift difficulty; note them on the graph. Pair with a note-taking support if speed stays low.
Limits
Unit word lists change in difficulty, which affects comparability. Handwriting speed affects scores; consider typing. The probe does not measure understanding of the words.

Criterion

Count of correct responses per minute on a timed task.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Data collection

A fixed-length timing (for example, 1 or 2 minutes) used to calculate a per-minute rate.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given a 2-minute dictation of vocabulary from current science and social studies units, one word every 8 seconds (total divided by 2 for the per-minute rate), the student will write each dictated content word before the next one is given independently at a rate of at least 40 correct letter sequences per minute, in 3 of 4 consecutive biweekly probes, as measured by timed probes collected every two weeks.

Baseline: 25 correct letter sequences per minute.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Rate (per minute) fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Timed probes gives rate (per minute) data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Spelling.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
