Early intervention

Last updated

Early intervention is the set of services for infants and toddlers, from birth to age 3, who have developmental delays or disabilities, and for their families.

Topic: Early childhood

In plain terms

Under IDEA Part C, each state runs an early intervention system, which may be led by a health, human services or education agency. Services can include speech, occupational and physical therapy, special instruction, family training and service coordination, often delivered at home or in child care by coaching parents during routines. Evaluation and service coordination are free; some states charge fees for other services on a sliding scale.

How it shows up in an IEP

Early intervention ends at age 3. Children who still need help may become eligible for preschool special education under Part B, which brings an IEP instead of an IFSP.
