MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Supports)

Last updated

MTSS is a schoolwide framework that uses data to give every student the right level of academic, behavioral and social-emotional support.

Topic: Evaluation and assessment

In plain terms

MTSS combines universal screening, tiered instruction, progress monitoring and team problem solving across academics and behavior. It usually brings together RTI for academics and PBIS for behavior under one system. The idea is that most students do well with core instruction, some need targeted help, and a few need intensive support.

How it shows up in an IEP

Special education is not a tier in most MTSS models; a student with an IEP can receive support at any tier. MTSS data helps teams see what was tried before referral and what intensity of help a student needs.
