Proofread own writing by listening to it

When to use this goal

For students who miss errors when they reread their own writing and do better hearing it read by text-to-speech. Present levels in editing decide fit.

Baseline
Count errors in three drafts before and after the student proofreads with and without listening.
Tips
Hearing writing read aloud catches missing and repeated words especially well.
Limits
Spelling errors that sound right are hard to catch by ear. The AT specialist and team choose the tool from an AT assessment and trial data; the template measures what the student does with it, not the tool's quality.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given a typed draft of their own and text-to-speech, the student will listen to the draft with text-to-speech, stop at each error they hear, and fix it independently with at least 70% accuracy on errors found and fixed, in 3 of 4 consecutive biweekly writing samples, as measured by work-sample analysis collected every two weeks.

Baseline: 30% accuracy.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Work-sample analysis gives percent accuracy data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Assistive Technology Use.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
