Build speed on home-row keys

3-5, K-2Rate (per minute)TemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students in early keyboarding instruction who know the home-row position and are building speed on those keys. Present levels from timed home-row drills decide the target.

Baseline
Time three 1-minute drills and use the median letters correct. Watch finger use on a few lines.
Tips
Count only correct letters. Correct fingering matters more than speed at this stage; note it on the sheet.
Limits
Typing rate varies with the text, the keyboard, and fatigue; keep these the same across probes and compare the student with their own baseline.

Criterion

Count of correct responses per minute on a timed task.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Criterion wording

Data collection

A fixed-length timing (for example, 1 or 2 minutes) used to calculate a per-minute rate.

Mastery rule

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given a 1-minute timed drill of home-row letter patterns and short words on screen, the student will type the letters shown using the correct finger for each key independently at a rate of at least 45 letters correct per minute, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by timed probes collected weekly.

Baseline: 20 letters correct per minute.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Rate (per minute) fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Timed probes gives rate (per minute) data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Keyboarding & Computer Access.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
