Copy printed text at a steady typing rate

3-5, 6-8Rate (per minute)TemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who know the keyboard and need typing to be fast enough to use for school work. Present levels from timed copying probes decide the target; grade alone does not.

Baseline
Use three 3-minute timings on different passages at the same level and use the median correct words per minute. Count a word correct only when every letter and the space after it are right.
Tips
Use easy text so reading does not limit typing. Compare with the student's handwriting rate to see whether typing is a better tool yet.
Limits
Typing rate varies with the text, the keyboard, and fatigue; keep these the same across probes and compare the student with their own baseline.

Something an adult can see, count or time.

Support

Support allowed

Criterion

Count of correct responses per minute on a timed task.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Criterion wording

Data collection

A fixed-length timing (for example, 1 or 2 minutes) used to calculate a per-minute rate.

How often data are collected
Mastery rule

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given a printed passage at an easy reading level beside the keyboard, during a 3-minute timing (total divided by 3 for the per-minute rate), the student will type the passage as written for three minutes independently at a rate of at least 15 correct words per minute, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by timed probes collected weekly.

Baseline: 7 correct words per minute.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Rate (per minute) fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Timed probes gives rate (per minute) data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Keyboarding & Computer Access.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
