Build typing rate on a tablet keyboard

3-5, 6-8Rate (per minute)TemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who use a tablet for school work and type slowly on the on-screen keyboard. Present levels from timed tablet typing decide the target; an external keyboard may be the better tool for long work.

Baseline
Time two passages on the tablet and two with an external keyboard and compare. The comparison guides the tool choice.
Tips
Record whether predictive text was on; it changes the rate a lot.
Limits
Typing rate varies with the text, the keyboard, and fatigue; keep these the same across probes and compare the student with their own baseline.

Skill

What the student will do

Something an adult can see, count or time.

Condition

When or under what conditions

Support

Support allowed

Criterion

Count of correct responses per minute on a timed task.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Criterion wording

Data collection

A fixed-length timing (for example, 1 or 2 minutes) used to calculate a per-minute rate.

How often data are collected
Mastery rule

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given a printed passage at an easy reading level and a tablet on a stand, during a 2-minute timing (total divided by 2 for the per-minute rate), the student will type the passage on the on-screen keyboard for two minutes independently at a rate of at least 12 correct words per minute, in 3 of 4 consecutive biweekly probes, as measured by timed probes collected every two weeks.

Baseline: 5 correct words per minute.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Rate (per minute) fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Timed probes gives rate (per minute) data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Keyboarding & Computer Access.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
