Find a named item on a contrasting tray

PK, K-2OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For young children with low vision who find objects when alone but lose them among other items. Present levels from the functional vision assessment decide the number of items and the contrast needed.

Baseline
Start with two items and add more only when the child finds the named one reliably. Record position errors, which can show a field loss on one side.
Tips
Vary the position of the named item so the child searches the whole tray. Accept the child's touch or point as the answer.
Limits
Object knowledge can mix with vision; use items the child already knows by name. The template does not measure distance vision.

What the student will do

Something an adult can see, count or time.

When or under what conditions

Support

Support allowed

Criterion

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Criterion wording

Data collection

Each planned or naturally occurring opportunity is recorded as correct/independent, prompted, or not demonstrated.

How often data are collected
Mastery rule

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given 3 familiar objects on a high-contrast tray, with one named by the adult, the student will scan the items and pick up the one named independently in at least 8 of 10 opportunities, across 3 consecutive sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected during each TVI session.

Baseline: 2 of 10 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Low Vision & Visual Efficiency.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
