Ask to see materials up close

K-2, 3-5OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For young students with low vision who cannot see a shared book, a demonstration, or a picture held up by the teacher. Present levels in speaking up in class decide fit.

Baseline
Ask the teacher to note five moments when something was shown to the class and record whether the student asked, the adult offered, or nothing happened.
Tips
Honor every request right away so asking is worth it. The teacher can also plan close copies ahead of time; this goal adds the student's own voice.
Limits
The number of opportunities depends on the teacher's lessons. The goal does not replace providing materials the student can see.

What the student will do

Something an adult can see, count or time.

When or under what conditions

Support

Support allowed

Criterion

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Criterion wording

Data collection

An adult observes and records the defined behavior during a specified activity.

How often data are collected
Mastery rule

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during whole-group lessons when the teacher shows a picture, an object, or a page, the student will raise a hand or say that they cannot see and ask to move closer or hold the item independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, on 4 of 5 observed days, as measured by direct observation collected twice weekly.

Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

  • Observable behavior

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Low Vision & Visual Efficiency.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
