Set work at a comfortable viewing distance

K-2, 3-5OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students with low vision who bend over their desk to see, which causes neck strain and fatigue. Present levels from TVI observation decide fit; the TVI and OT may choose a slant board or reading stand together.

Baseline
Observe five work tasks and record whether the student sets up the stand, needs a reminder, or works bent over. Note how long they work before showing fatigue.
Tips
Let the student choose the angle and distance that work for them. Many students with low vision read close up, which is not harmful; posture is the concern.
Limits
The template does not measure reading or writing performance. Some tasks (cutting, science labs) do not fit a stand.

Skill

What the student will do

Something an adult can see, count or time.

Condition

When or under what conditions

Support

Support allowed

Criterion

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Criterion wording

Data collection

An adult observes and records the defined behavior during a specified activity.

How often data are collected
Mastery rule

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during independent reading and writing tasks, with a slant board or reading stand at the desk, the student will independently place the page or book on the slant board or stand and adjust it so they can see without bending over the desk in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, on 4 of 5 observed days, as measured by direct observation collected twice weekly.

Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Low Vision & Visual Efficiency.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
