Spot distant targets with a monocular

3-5, 6-8Percent accuracyTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students with low vision who have a prescribed monocular telescope and are learning to find and focus on distant targets. Present levels in near tasks with the monocular decide fit.

Baseline
Post 10 targets at known distances and record which the student finds and reads. Time is useful too; note slow targets.
Tips
Teach spotting in order: find the target with the eye, bring the monocular up without losing it, then focus. Use the eye and hand the eye doctor recommends.
Limits
Monoculars narrow the field of view, so moving targets are hard. The template does not cover copying from the board, which is a separate goal.

Original IEP Atlas template based on general measurement principles; not copied from any goal bank. ID ac-lv-012.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given numbered cards posted at different places around the classroom and the student's monocular, the student will find each target without the monocular, raise the monocular, focus it, and read the number or word aloud independently with at least 85% accuracy on distant targets read, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.

Baseline: 40% accuracy.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Low Vision & Visual Efficiency.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
