Use a handheld magnifier for small print

    Handheld magnifier

By the annual IEP review date, during class work with small print the student cannot read without magnification, such as a map, a graph label, or a glossary, the student will take out the handheld magnifier, find the focal distance, and read the small print independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, on 4 of 5 observed days, as measured by direct observation collected twice weekly.

  • 3-5, 6-8Task-analysis steps

    Set up a video magnifier

    Video magnifier setup

By the annual IEP review date, given a desktop or portable video magnifier and a reading or worksheet task, the student will turn on the video magnifier and set the zoom, focus, and color mode they prefer before reading, performing all 7 steps independently, on 4 of 5 observed days, as measured by a task-analysis checklist collected twice weekly.

  • 3-5, 6-8Rate (per minute)

Build reading rate on a video magnifier

    Reading with a video magnifier

By the annual IEP review date, given an unpracticed passage in regular print at the student's instructional level, on the video magnifier at the student's preferred settings, the student will read the passage aloud for one minute, moving the reading table smoothly along each line independently at a rate of at least 60 words read correctly per minute, in 3 of 4 consecutive biweekly probes, as measured by timed probes collected every two weeks.

  • 3-5, 6-8Percent accuracy

Spot distant targets with a monocular

    Monocular telescope: spotting

By the annual IEP review date, given numbered cards posted at different places around the classroom and the student's monocular, the student will find each target without the monocular, raise the monocular, focus it, and read the number or word aloud independently with at least 85% accuracy on distant targets read, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.

  • 3-5, 6-8Percent accuracy

Copy from the board with a monocular

    Monocular telescope: copying

By the annual IEP review date, given a short set of notes or math problems on the board and the student's monocular, the student will read a chunk of text with the monocular, write it, and find their place again on the board independently with at least 85% accuracy on words or numbers copied correctly, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by work-sample analysis collected weekly.

  • 3-5, 6-8, 9-12Opportunities

Use a tablet camera to view the board

    Tablet camera for distance viewing

By the annual IEP review date, during a lesson with notes, slides, or a demonstration at the front of the room, with a tablet and a camera or magnifier app, the student will aim the tablet camera, zoom to read the board or slide, and take a photo of it to review later independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, on 4 of 5 observed days, as measured by direct observation collected twice weekly.

Frequently asked questions

How are low vision & visual efficiency goals measured across several middle school classes?

By defining the task and the observation period so any teacher can use the same sheet, or by work samples collected from more than one class. Student self-monitoring with a weekly check is common.

Should middle school goals include study skills?

When assessment shows that organization, planning, or test preparation limits the student's progress, yes. Those goals are measured with task-analysis checklists and percent of assignments completed.

When does transition planning start?

The IEP in effect when the student turns 16 must include postsecondary goals and transition services, and many states start at 14. Middle school goals can build the self-advocacy and independence those plans rely on.
