Build reading rate on a video magnifier

3-5, 6-8Rate (per minute)TemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who set up a video magnifier and read with it, but slowly, because of tracking, page movement, or finding the next line. Present levels from timed readings on the device decide the target.

Baseline
Time three unpracticed passages on the device and on large print if used, and compare. Note where time is lost: finding the next line, moving the table, or decoding.
Tips
Rate on a magnifier is usually slower than unmagnified print; compare with the student's own baseline. Practice moving the table with both hands in a smooth rhythm.
Limits
The rate shows device efficiency combined with reading skill. For long readings, audio or text-to-speech may be the better tool; that is a team decision.

Skill

What the student will do

Something an adult can see, count or time.

When or under what conditions

Support

Support allowed

Criterion

Count of correct responses per minute on a timed task.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Criterion wording

Data collection

A fixed-length timing (for example, 1 or 2 minutes) used to calculate a per-minute rate.

How often data are collected
Mastery rule

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given an unpracticed passage in regular print at the student's instructional level, on the video magnifier at the student's preferred settings, the student will read the passage aloud for one minute, moving the reading table smoothly along each line independently at a rate of at least 60 words read correctly per minute, in 3 of 4 consecutive biweekly probes, as measured by timed probes collected every two weeks.

Baseline: 35 words read correctly per minute.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Rate (per minute) fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Timed probes gives rate (per minute) data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Low Vision & Visual Efficiency.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
