Use upper and lower body protection

K-2, 3-5OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who travel without a cane in some places, or before cane use, and need to protect the head and body in unfamiliar or open areas. Present levels from O&M observation decide the settings to start with.

Baseline
Plan five situations in an O&M lesson where protection is needed and record whether the student uses the right technique, uses it after a cue, or does not.
Tips
Count only situations where protection is needed. Pair with cane goals; protective techniques stay useful in places a cane is not used, such as at home.
Limits
Protective techniques do not find drop-offs. The goal does not replace the O&M specialist's judgment about when the student is ready for a harder route or less supervision.

What the student will do

Something an adult can see, count or time.

Criterion

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Data collection

An adult observes and records the defined behavior during a specified activity.

How often data are collected

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, when traveling through an unfamiliar room, an open area, or a space with furniture moved, the student will raise the forearm across the body at shoulder height or lower the hand in front of the hips to protect the body while moving independently in 5 of 5 opportunities, on 4 consecutive observed days, as measured by direct observation collected during each O&M lesson.

Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Orientation & Mobility.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
