Square off and cross an open space

K-2, 3-5OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who travel along walls but veer or get lost crossing open spaces such as a gym, lobby, or cafeteria. Present levels in body alignment and protective techniques decide fit.

Baseline
Have the student cross the same open space four times and measure how far from the target they arrive. A crossing counts when they reach the target door or a set range on the wall.
Tips
Agree on the target range ahead of time (for example, within arm's reach of the door). A sound at the target is a support to fade.
Limits
Veering varies with fatigue and noise. The goal does not replace the O&M specialist's judgment about when the student is ready for a harder route or less supervision.

Criterion

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Data collection

An adult observes and records the defined behavior during a specified activity.

How often data are collected

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, when crossing the gym or a lobby to reach the wall or door on the far side, the student will align their back or side with a wall, walk a straight line across the space, and reach the target wall or door independently in 4 of 4 opportunities, across 3 consecutive O&M lessons, as measured by direct observation collected during each O&M lesson.

Baseline: 1 of 4 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Orientation & Mobility.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
