Travel safely at dusk or in dim light

9-12, 6-8OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For travelers with low vision who move well in daylight but lose function in dim light, at night, or in dark buildings. Present levels from O&M observation in low light decide fit; some students start cane use for these times only.

Baseline
Observe the student on the same route in daylight and at dusk and record what changes. Ask the student when they find travel hardest.
Tips
Let the student choose the strategy that works for them. Plan low-light lessons in the seasons when the student travels in the dark, such as winter afternoons.
Limits
Vision may change over time. The goal does not replace the O&M specialist's judgment about when the student is ready for a harder route or less supervision.

Skill

What the student will do

Something an adult can see, count or time.

Condition

When or under what conditions

Support

Support allowed

Criterion

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Criterion wording

Data collection

An adult observes and records the defined behavior during a specified activity.

How often data are collected
Mastery rule

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during an O&M lesson at dusk on a familiar route, the student will use the cane or a flashlight, slow their pace, and use taught landmarks to reach the destination independently in 4 of 4 opportunities, across 3 consecutive low-light lessons, as measured by direct observation collected during each low-light lesson, at least monthly.

Baseline: 1 of 4 opportunities.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Orientation & Mobility.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
