Stay in place when an adult says to wait there

K-2, 3-5DurationTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who wander off when told to wait at a spot while the adult steps away (to help another student, answer the door, get materials). Measures how long the student stays. Base the choice on timed waits. Waiting at doors and curbs for safety is in safety-behavior bh-saf-006.

Baseline
Time 5 waits from the direction to either the adult's return or the student leaving the spot. Start with the adult in sight and short waits, and note what pulled the student away. Always return within the known tolerance during baseline so the wait ends well.
Tips
Mark the spot and keep the wait something the student can do, with a task in hand at first. Come back before the limit and stretch slowly. Raising a hand or calling the adult's name counts as staying. This is a classroom skill; never leave a student who runs unsupervised to practice it.
Limits
Measures staying, not what the student does while waiting. Students who need constant supervision for safety should not be left for the wait at all; use the goal only with an adult in sight.

How long a behavior lasts, from a defined start to a defined end.

The length of time a behavior lasts is timed from a defined start to a defined end.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, when an adult directs the student to wait at a marked spot and steps up to 15 feet away, the student will stay at the marked spot until the adult returns or gives the next direction independently for at least 180 seconds, on 4 of 5 consecutive recorded waits, as measured by duration recording collected daily, 2 to 3 waits, summarized weekly.

Baseline: 20 seconds.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Duration fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Duration recording gives duration data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Following Adult Directions.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
