Carry out a direction at a later time

3-5, 6-8OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who follow directions in the moment but forget ones meant for later ("after lunch, bring your permission slip to the office"). Fit depends on memory and organization present levels. Pair with an executive-function goal if the student needs a reminder system taught.

Baseline
Give five delayed directions over a week with delays of 30 minutes to a few hours and record whether each was carried out on time, late, or not at all. Note which delays fail; many students manage 30 minutes but not lunch to dismissal.
Tips
Teach the student to capture the direction right away (write it, set an alarm) and count self-made reminders as independent; that is what adults do. Make the delayed directions real jobs, not tests. Lengthen the delay as success grows.
Limits
Mixes memory and behavior; if the student never captures the direction, the need may be an executive-function goal (see the organization and time-management skills). Directions given in noisy moments may not be heard.

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Each planned or naturally occurring opportunity is recorded as correct/independent, prompted, or not demonstrated.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, when an adult gives a direction to be carried out at a later time in the same school day, the student will independently carry out the direction at the stated time without being reminded in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive weekly data summaries, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected 5 planned delayed directions per week.

Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Following Adult Directions.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
