Hold the adult's hand or the walking ring on walks

PKDurationTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For preschoolers who let go and dart during walks between the classroom, playground, and bus. Measures continuous time holding on. Base the choice on timed walks. The target is the length of the walk itself.

Baseline
Time the longest stretch holding on during 5 walks and note where the student lets go. Record which option the student holds best (a hand, a ring, a rope); some students hold a ring far longer than a hand.
Tips
Make the walk interesting (count doors, sing) and praise holding on throughout. Letting go to adjust a grip and taking hold again within 3 seconds does not stop the clock if the team agrees. This goal is for safety on short walks; it is not a goal about tolerating touch, and a student who dislikes hand-holding should use a ring or rope.
Limits
Walk lengths vary; sample the same walk each week. Older preschoolers should move toward bh-saf-001 so hand-holding is not required past the age peers hold hands.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during a walk from the classroom to the playground while holding an adult's hand or the walking ring, the student will stay holding the adult's hand or the walking ring independently for at least 4 minutes, on 4 of 5 consecutive recorded walks, as measured by duration recording collected daily, 1 to 2 walks.

Baseline: 1 minutes.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Duration fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Duration recording gives duration data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Safety Behaviors.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
