Keep the chair on the floor and feet down while seated

When to use this goal

For students who tip chairs back, kneel on chairs, or climb on furniture during seated work. Measures continuous time seated safely. Base the choice on duration recording. The OT may suggest seating that gives movement safely.

Baseline
Time the longest stretch seated safely during 5 work periods and count tips. Check whether the chair fits; a chair where the feet dangle produces tipping in most students, and the fix is a footrest, not a goal.
Tips
Fix the seating first, then measure. Chairs that allow rocking safely (a wobble stool) count as safe sitting if the team agrees. Reinforce stretches of safe sitting rather than reacting to tips. Students who need movement should also have a movement break goal (replacement-behavior bh-rep-025).
Limits
Measures posture safety, not attention or work. Does not fit students using adaptive seating with different positioning rules; follow the OT's or PT's plan.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during a 20-minute seated work period at a standard chair and desk, the student will sit with all chair legs on the floor and feet on the floor or footrest independently for at least 15 minutes, on 4 of 5 consecutive recorded work periods, as measured by duration recording collected daily during one seated work period.

Baseline: 3 minutes.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Duration fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Duration recording gives duration data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Safety Behaviors.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
